Benromach 15 Years Old launched

15-Years-Old-Bottle-Box-2A notable new addition to the Benromach stable of classic Speyside single malt whiskies has gone on sale.
Benromach 15 Years Old has a distinctive golden amber colour thanks to long maturation in sherry and bourbon casks and a soft smokiness.

It tastes of luscious sherry and rich fruitcake with stewed plums and a hint of cocoa.

Launched by the Benromach Distillery Company Ltd, the 15 Years Old is available now with an RSP of £48.99 (prices may vary in export markets because of duty and import taxes).

As with all Benromach whiskies, the 15 Years Old is hand-crafted by just three distillers using the finest natural ingredients at the Forres distillery.

Benromach, in Forres, was bought over by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993 and carefully restored.
It was opened once again in 1998 by HRH Prince Charles and has since gained a reputation for producing an innovative range of distinctive Speyside whiskies with pre-1960s character.

Ewen Mackintosh, Chief Operating Officer of Gordon & MacPhail which owns the Benromach Distillery Company Ltd, said: “The Benromach story is a remarkable one, and the launch of the 15 Years Old marks a significant milestone in the distillery’s history.

“The whisky has a great deal of character and we hope it will appeal to whisky lovers who have tried other Benromach single malts and to those who would like to see what a classic pre-1960s Speyside malt is like.”

The packaging for Benromach 15 Years Old adopts the same design principles as the 10 Years Old, with the addition of gold effect detailing to highlight the premium nature of the product.

The bottle style and packaging reflects the hand-crafted character of the Benromach whiskies.

The elegant bottle’s neck and shoulder resembles the shape of the Benromach stills while the box, complete with embossed hand-drawn lettering, replicates their colour.

BenRiach launches a trio of new cask finishes

The BenRiach Distillery Company has today announced the launch of three new expressions, which illustrate Master Distiller Billy Walker’s unique ability to marry whisky with wood to create complex, sublime drams.

BenRiach Releases

The new trio of releases consists of; BenRiach 15 Year Old Sauternes Finish and BenRiach 18 Year Old Albariza, which is a peated whisky finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. From its sister distillery GlenDronach, there’s a new 18 Year Old Marsala Cask Finish, which owes its distinctive flavour to the influence of a small number of Marsala hogsheads.

The BenRiach 15 Year Old Sauternes Finish, is matured in the traditional style in American bourbon barrels, then finished in Sauternes casks from the Bordeaux region of France. Sauternes gives its name to an award-winning dessert wine and the finishing effect on the whisky is stunning, as the tasting notes reveal.

The BenRiach 18 Year Old Albariza, is distilled from peated malted barley, matured in American oak casks and then finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. The whisky has been named after the white soil with high chalk content whose characteristics make it the best type of soil for growing grapes used in the production of sherry. This whisky combines the distinctive BenRiach aroma of peat with a silky sherry sweetness to make it a memorable dram.

GlenDronach 18 Year Old Marsala Cask Finish, is a unique expression that was initially matured in European oak casks and thereafter finished its maturation in a small batch of Marsala hogsheads. The aromatic influence of the Italian fortified wine cask on the sweet Highland malt whisky is spectacular, creating a new layer of depth that stunningly marries together summer fruits with peppery oak spice.

All three of the new releases are natural in colour, non-chill filtered, bottled at 46% ABV and are now available from specialist retailers.

Redbreast unveil first ever 100% Sherry Cask Matured expression

Redbreast Mano a Lámh

redbreastmanoalamhlrgRedbreast unveil first ever 100% Sherry Cask Matured limited edition expression.

Fans of the superb Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish whiskey will be pleased to hear that they have announced the release of Redbreast Mano a Lámh, this is the first expression released in the Redbreast range which has been 100% matured in sherry casks.

The name of the new expression, Mano a Lámh, means ‘hand in hand’ in Spanish and Gaelic respectively, represents the relationship and passion between the Midleton Distillery and the collective of artisans in Spain, which has crafted the distillery’s sherry butts for more than 20 years.

The limited edition of only 2000 bottles will be available exclusively to members of The Stillhouse, the online members club for fans of Irish Distillers Single Pot Still Irish whiskey brands. To get hold of a bottle visit www.singlepotstill.com where the new whiskey will be available from this month priced at €65, but don’t hang around as I suspect this will go rather quickly.

Fans of Redbreast single pot still whiskey range will be aware that the whiskey is traditionally matured in a combination of American Bourbon and Spanish Oloroso butts. The new limited edition Redbreast Mano a Lámh luxuriates in this signature sherry style by bringing together whiskeys which have been matured exclusively in first fill Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, which is sure to impart distinct, rich, fruity flavours and a full body.

Billy Leighton, Master Blender at Midleton Distillery, said: “Redbreast Mano a Lámh celebrates our longstanding relationship with the family of artisans in Spain who craft our sherry butts, which are so synonymous with the signature style of Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish whiskey. It was an exciting challenge as a Master Blender to work on this project; having to ensure that the right balance was achieved and the sherry contribution did not over power in the final taste. For me, Redbreast Mano a Lámh offers a distinctive, rich whiskey with intense flavours of dried fruit, which gives way to the perfection of the Spanish oak. I am really eager to learn what our Stillhouse members and Redbreast fans think of this rare expression.”

As I said the new whiskey is imited to just 2,000 bottles, Redbreast Mano a Lámh is non-chill filtered at 46% ABV and is available exclusively to members of The Stillhouse from February 2015, priced at €65. Redbreast Mano a Lámh Tasting Note

Billy Leighton, Midleton Master Blender Tasting Notes:

Nose: Very deep dried fruits, raisins and sultanas with the more earthy tones of fig, dates and prunes. The sweetness is from the fruit and balances perfectly with pot still spices such as dill and black pepper, and the contribution of the toasted Spanish oak.

Taste: Silky smooth and deceptively sweet, full of rich, ripe, dark fruit with the leisurely emergence of the signature spices.

Finish: The rich fruit slowly gives way to the perfection of the Spanish oak.

Glendronach releases Batch 11 of its single cask bottlings

GlenDronach_Batch_11_1971_cask_#_2920_Infront (1)Award winning Aberdeenshire distillery GlenDronach, has today announced the release of its 11th batch of single cask bottlings.

Ranging from 18 to 43 years in age, the nine new releases offer a huge and intriguing variety, six of which were matured in Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheons, two in Oloroso sherry butts and one in an Oloroso sherry puncheon.

The oldest, 1971 Cask Number 2920 (48.6% ABV) is a 43 Years Old malt matured in a Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon. Intense treacle toffee floods over sour plums and roasted coffee. Harmonising waves of leather and tobacco give great depth and are balanced perfectly by a subtle toasted walnut and date back note.

As a contrast the 18 Year Old from Cask Number 244 (56.9% ABV) is the youngest, distilled in February 1996. Matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, there is a tremendous balance of mixed candied peel and stewed dark fruits sprinkled with dark Demerara. Delicious waves of toffee, cracked barley and warm oak spices combine to give a long and elegant finish.

All nine single casks have been hand-selected by BenRiach’s Managing Director and Master Distiller Billy Walker who described them as “sensational” and added: “I believe Batch 11 makes a very simple point – the wood has a huge influence on the spirit. You immediately sense – and taste – the influence of the casks on these nine sublime single malts. The subtle interaction of the ex-sherry wood with the Highland spirit over long dark years in the warehouse creates a luxurious and amazingly complex raft of flavours. In these nine expressions you feel the pulse of our inventory at GlenDronach and the idiosyncratic personality of the casks coming through. That, plus the passion and craftsmanship of our people, is what produces these incredible whiskies time and time again.”
