Pernod Ricard announce the US launch of its Yellow Spot single pot still Irish Whiskey

Yellow SpotPernod Ricard has announced the official US release of its award-winning Yellow Spot 12 Year Old single pot still Irish whiskey.

Since its launch in 2012, Yellow Spot has been exclusively available in the UK and other select European countries. It will now join two of Pernod Ricard’s other renowned single pot still whiskies, Redbreast and Green Spot, which entered the US market last year.

Each batch of Yellow Spot is made from a mash of malted and un-malted barley, which is then triple distilled in traditional copper stills. It is then matured in a combination of American bourbon, Spanish sherry and Spanish Malaga casks.

Yellow Spot was created and sold by Mitchell & Son Wine and Spirit Merchants in Dublin. The Mitchell family was in the whiskey bonding business and sent empty wine, sherry and port casks to the local Jameson distillery, which were filled and returned to the Mitchell’s cellar warehouse.

Commenting on the launch, Paul Di Vito, Vice President of Irish and North American Whiskey at Pernod Ricard, said: “Single Pot Still Irish Whiskies are the quintessential style of Irish whiskey and are characterized by full complex flavours. We are thrilled to bring Yellow Spot to American whiskey lovers as Single Pot Stills have become highly desired.”

Yellow Spot 12 Year Old single pot still Irish whiskey, will be available across the US during February for a suggested retail price of $99.99.

Redbreast unveil first ever 100% Sherry Cask Matured expression

redbreastmanoalamhlrgRedbreast unveil first ever 100% Sherry Cask Matured limited edition expression.

Fans of the superb Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish whiskey will be pleased to hear that they have announced the release of Redbreast Mano a Lámh, this is the first expression released in the Redbreast range which has been 100% matured in sherry casks.

The name of the new expression, Mano a Lámh, means ‘hand in hand’ in Spanish and Gaelic respectively, represents the relationship and passion between the Midleton Distillery and the collective of artisans in Spain, which has crafted the distillery’s sherry butts for more than 20 years.

The limited edition of only 2000 bottles will be available exclusively to members of The Stillhouse, the online members club for fans of Irish Distillers Single Pot Still Irish whiskey brands. To get hold of a bottle visit where the new whiskey will be available from this month priced at €65, but don’t hang around as I suspect this will go rather quickly.

Fans of Redbreast single pot still whiskey range will be aware that the whiskey is traditionally matured in a combination of American Bourbon and Spanish Oloroso butts. The new limited edition Redbreast Mano a Lámh luxuriates in this signature sherry style by bringing together whiskeys which have been matured exclusively in first fill Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, which is sure to impart distinct, rich, fruity flavours and a full body.

Billy Leighton, Master Blender at Midleton Distillery, said: “Redbreast Mano a Lámh celebrates our longstanding relationship with the family of artisans in Spain who craft our sherry butts, which are so synonymous with the signature style of Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish whiskey. It was an exciting challenge as a Master Blender to work on this project; having to ensure that the right balance was achieved and the sherry contribution did not over power in the final taste. For me, Redbreast Mano a Lámh offers a distinctive, rich whiskey with intense flavours of dried fruit, which gives way to the perfection of the Spanish oak. I am really eager to learn what our Stillhouse members and Redbreast fans think of this rare expression.”

As I said the new whiskey is imited to just 2,000 bottles, Redbreast Mano a Lámh is non-chill filtered at 46% ABV and is available exclusively to members of The Stillhouse from February 2015, priced at €65. Redbreast Mano a Lámh Tasting Note

Billy Leighton, Midleton Master Blender Tasting Notes:

Nose: Very deep dried fruits, raisins and sultanas with the more earthy tones of fig, dates and prunes. The sweetness is from the fruit and balances perfectly with pot still spices such as dill and black pepper, and the contribution of the toasted Spanish oak.

Taste: Silky smooth and deceptively sweet, full of rich, ripe, dark fruit with the leisurely emergence of the signature spices.

Finish: The rich fruit slowly gives way to the perfection of the Spanish oak.
