Quote of the day

"The proper drinking of Scotch whisky is more than indulgence: it is a toast to civilization, a tribute to the continuity of culture, a manifesto of man’s determination to use the resources of nature to refresh mind and body and enjoy to the full the senses with which he has been endowed."

    - David Daiches

TLimeburnershe Great Southern Distilling Company has made history with the release of Western Australia’s first official Single Malt Whisky.

Hand-distilled and aged for over two years in American Oak barrels, our Single Malt Whisky has now been packaged under the commemorative Limeburners - First Release  label and is available for purchase in a limited release of 330 individually numbered bottles.

The Limeburners First Release is non-chill filtered and has a sweet malt flavour displaying a subtle bouquet of vanilla, cinnamon, candied orange peel, mocha and butterscotch.

This unique achievement required vision, passion and plenty of hard work from Great Southern Distilling Company founding director Cameron Syme and the rest of the distillery team.  Cameron’s research into producing a fine Single Malt Whisky began 16 years ago and culminated in the recent establishment of a distillery, contemporary cafe and cellar door facility on the shore of Albany’s Princess Royal Harbour.

Visitors to the distillery at 252 Frenchman Bay Road have the opportunity to learn a little of the history of Whisky distillation from Head Distiller Tony Browne and to see the process in operation before finally sampling and purchasing the finished product.

Icooley.gifreland’s Independent Whiskey Distillery Romps to Victory at the IWSC

Cooley Distillery, Irelands only independent Irish whiskey distillery, has won a record 9 Gold Medals at the 2008 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC).

This was the first time that an Irish whiskey distiller managed to collect 9 IWSC Gold Medals, including 8 “Best in Class”. IWSC medals, awarded on a strict points system, are the most prestigious honours bestowed to the drinks industry as they recognise the elite in the world of wine and spirits.

Cooley’s golden run continues from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition where the Louth based distiller won 6 double gold medals earlier this year.

“2008 has been our most successful year to date. Winning 21 Gold Medals, between the IWSC and San Francisco World Spirits Competition, in the year of our 21st birthday, shows how our distillery and our whiskey has truly come of age” said Jack Teeling, Marketing Director for Cooley Distillery.

The independent distillery’s overall medal tally of 15 eclipsed all other Irish whiskey companies at the prestigious IWSC with Cooley’s top Irish rival managing to collect (more…)

Springbank cutting back production

Posted by RJS on June 28th, 2008

ASpringbanks a consequence of the continuing instability of basic raw material prices, which have doubled within the last year, the management of J & A Mitchell and Company Ltd. have decided to cut back the production of new spirit at their Springbank and Glengyle Distilleries until prices settle. The state of the materials market will be kept under continuous review.

The opportunity will be taken to carry out necessary maintenance work and create the increased warehousing accommodation required for future development. In the short term there will however, regrettably, be a few staff redundancies. There will be no impact on the availability of bottled Springbank whisky or the Kilkerran whisky from its Glengyle Distillery as the Company has ample stocks of young maturing whisky which will enable it to continue supplying its home and export markets as normal.
